I am often asked about systems thinking, systems visualization and how to approach gnarly problems. There are many ways to visualize a system, it’s usually not a matter of finding a method, it’s making sure that you do visualize the system in as much detail as possible to find good leverage points for positive change. When we take action before we understand what is happening and why its happening there is a high likelihood that we are destined for unintended consequences.
Draw toast from Tom Wujec is a great way to both understand systems thinking and systems visualization, but also he provides an 8 step method to tackle your wicked problems.
Simply watch his ted talk found on the home page here and then try the method with a real life example, it’s that easy!
It gives you great tips in terms of group collaboration also. I personally often will use the method of no talking when generating ideas, sorting, and making connections as a group.
Have fun with it and please do share back your favorite systems thinking and mapping approaches.
