Being in Barcelona for over a week has given us a love for this cities architecture, infrastructure, food, people, and diversity. We have heard about Antoni Gaudi but have never had the chance to see his work in person or really dig into his life. Seeing only a few examples of his work has given us a real appreciation for his creativity, design and love of integrating nature.
We first saw the Sagrada Familia and it seemed to be out of a fairy tale. Still under construction it will house the tallest steeple in the world. Park Guell was amazing. Gaudi was hired by Guell for several projects but this community of 60 villas, parks and public spaces was like nothing we had ever seen. The Mosaics, columns, and winding paths were so beautiful and tranquil. The project was never completed as the target families of wealthy never invested in the remote location and Guell passed away. Following his death, the heirs to his estate passed this land to the city and it has been a public park ever since.
Finley commented that some of the buildings looked like gingerbread houses. We learned that Gaudi modeled his work after nature with flowing lines like the benches modeled after a snake. The columns appear to be leaning in places, Finley and Grace loved learning about how when structured correctly the leaning columns drive all the weight to the ground, and then we tried it!
What an amazing city and what amazing hosts we had as we crashed their house for over a week. What could be better than rich culture and lifetime friends?
