We never set out thinking our return journey from Europe would be across the Atlantic on a boat. Never in my life did I think I would be crossing the big ocean in that way. It made me think of my grandparents and their journey in the early 20th century. I found myself thinking about the countless number of people over the centuries who crossed unwillingly and then helped to form a new culture in the Americas. When the seas were particularly rough one day I didn’t feel well but I also kept the perspective of what it would have been like on that ocean in a wooden ship with only wind power. The magnitude of the buffet each day was no comparison to scores of crews plagued by a lack of food and scurvy. I found myself thinking about the massive amount of waste on these cruise ships and it made me wonder if anyone else was thinking in that way other than our family. Don’t get me wrong, it was a beautiful ship with impressive shows, food and amenities. We enjoyed seeing European and Caribbean ports along the way home.
I found myself conflicted. We got a tremendous deal on the 17 night trip as we booked it last minute. The kids loved the freedom of wandering the ship, getting their own food, and really being among the only young ones out of 4000 passengers. The Azores were amazing, a must visit. The Caribbean stops were stunning with white sand beaches and beautiful landscapes. I couldn’t help think about what the impact of 4000 people descending upon these small islands was both positive and negative.
We are curious to hear your thoughts on cruises? The good, the bad and ugly.
I was impressed that MSC has made a commitment to go carbon neutral as a cruise line and it was wonderful to see such an international employment opportunity for so many. Where do you stand?, What are your thoughts?
My thoughts?: A brilliant way to end a trip to Europe! I’m sure your internal conflict inspired many powerful lessons for Finely and Grace.

It certainly did but I often wonder at what age the idea of immediate gratification and longer term orientation can be understood.
